Derek Hough Says Wife Is ‘On the Long Road of Recovery’ After Emergency Brain Surgery

Derek Hough updates his wife's health.

The Dancing With the Stars judge said on Friday (Dec. 8) that his wife, Hayley Erbert, 28, is “on the long road of recovery” after emergency brain surgery.

“Hayley has always inspired me with her will, her strength, and her resilience and no more so than in the last 48 hrs,” Hough, 38, said on Instagram. “She is on the long road to recovery.”

He said, “Words cannot express how grateful and thankful we are for your support and love.

This incredible and life-changing time has been filled with unimaginable kindness. The generous offers of help are humbling and appreciated.”

The professional dancer said, “Our hope is that as a family, we can somehow and some way pay it forward.”

Hough disclosed earlier in the week that professional dancer Erbert was hospitalized after becoming “disoriented” after a Symphony of Dance performance in Washington, D.C. She ended up with a “cranial hematoma from a burst blood vessel and required an emergency craniotomy.”

An intracranial hematoma is a skull-based blood accumulation, according to the Mayo Clinic. A brain blood vessel break generally causes it.” The Mayo Clinic suggests “trauma such as a car accident or fall” may trigger it. “The blood may collect in brain tissue or underneath the skull, pressing on the brain.”
