George Floyd's Killer Derek Chauvin Is in 'Stable Condition' and 'Expected to Survive' Prison Stabbing Attack

Authorities said Derek Chauvin is "expected to survive" the recent jail stabbing attack in which he was engaged.

Chauvin, 47, the former Minneapolis police officer convicted of murdering George Floyd, was attacked in an Arizona prison earlier this week.

In remarks, Minneapolis police chief Brian O'Hara and a representative for state Attorney General Keith Ellison's office inform PEOPLE that Chauvin is recovering.

O'Hara, citing his agency's "federal law enforcement partners," stated that Chauvin was "in stable condition."

Meanwhile, according to Brian Evans, an Ellison spokesperson, the attorney general's office "heard that [Chauvin] is expected to survive" as of Friday evening.

According to a source acquainted with the event, Chauvin was gravely hurt after another inmate attacked him at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson, Arizona, on Friday.

According to the site, the facility is medium-security but has been understaffed, resulting in a lack of security.
