Mick Wingert's New Voice for Iron Man: Why Robert Downey Jr. Was Replaced

Tony Stark's Iron Man is back at the center of the MCU, but Robert Downey Jr. isn't there.

Because of the Multiverse, Iron Man was back fighting with the Avengers and meeting the Grandmaster on Sakaar in "What If..." The Christmas Eve and Christmas Day shows from Season 2.

On the other hand, Robert Downey Jr. isn't playing his famous character on Disney+ like his fellow Avengers stars are. Instead, voice actor Mick Wingert is.

Like in Season 1 of What If...? on Disney+, Mick Wingert played Iron Man instead of Robert Downey Jr.

Even though What If...? is a cartoon streaming show and not a live-action MCU project, most of the Marvel Studios stars who voiced their characters were there,

like Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury.

Scarlett Johansson, who plays Black Widow, also didn't do voice work for the show. Instead, voice actor Lake Bell did it.

There seems to be more than one reason. For starters, both Johannson and Downey Jr.'s live-action characters died in Avengers: Endgame and have since left the MCU. Plus, these big-name actors aren't cheap.
