President Obama's top picks for 2023 movies include "Rustin," "Oppenheimer," "Past Lives," and more.

In what has become a yearly tradition for the former President of the United States, Barack Obama has named his top movies of the year. The first three movies on the list—"Rustin," "Leave the World Behind," and "American Symphony"—were all made by his company, Higher Ground, which he and his wife Michelle started.

Trump wrote, "I'm biased because Higher Ground made these movies, but these are three of the best movies I saw this year."

The movies "Rustin" (Colman Domingo) and "Leave the World Behind" (Ethan Hawke, Julia Roberts, and Mahershala Ali) are about civil rights activist Bayard Rustin who is often forgotten.

"American Symphony" is about musician Jon Batiste and his life partner Suleika Jaouad as he tries to write a symphony and she finds out that her cancer has come back.

Obama put his list in a bigger picture and mentioned the two strikes that changed the entertainment business in 2023 in a post on X/Twitter. He wrote, "Earlier this year, writers and actors went on strike to demand better working conditions and protections."

It caused major changes that will make the business world better. These movies, like "Rustin," "American Symphony," and "Leave the World Behind," show how hard they've worked over the last year. We're happy to have released them through @HGMedia. What movies did I not see?"

Obama also said that "The Holdovers," "Blackberry," "Oppenheimer," "American Fiction," "Anatomy of a Fall," "Monster," "Past Lives," "Air," "Polite Society," and "A Thousand and One" were some of his favorite movies of 2023.

Obama wrote on social media, "Update: just saw 'The Color Purple' and loved it.'" This was after sharing the first list. This is one of my favorite movies of the year, so I'm adding it to this list.
